What Intelligence Is For
Some people are born intelligent. Others seem to pick it up along the way. At least that is how it looks from the outside.
After 35 years of watching people, including myself, I have started to see it differently. Intelligence is inbuilt. It comes pre-installed, like a feature you did not ask for. The amount varies from person to person, and that is what makes everyone unique. But the amount itself does not change.
What changes is how a person evolves around it.
We use "intelligent" and "meritorious" as if they mean the same thing. They do not. I have seen sharp people behave like complete idiots. Selfish and reckless. Their intelligence is still there, buried under layers of ego and bad choices. And I have seen people with average ability suddenly perform at a level that shocks everyone around them. It is tempting to say they got smarter. They did not. They just started using what was always there.
Think about Ramanujan. Einstein. Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose. The kind of intelligence that makes you feel like the universe picked favorites. On the spiritual side, Ramakrishna Dev and Vivekananda showed extraordinary clarity from childhood. Not something they studied for. Something they arrived with.
Does that feel unfair? I thought so too for a long time. Nature being random. Some people getting dealt a stronger hand.
But the more I sit with this, the more I see a connection I was not expecting. And this is where the post turns spiritual.
Intelligence and Liberation
I know a little about Advaita Vedanta. Not a lot. Enough to have read the core idea several times, stated both directly and indirectly that we are consciousness. We are not separate from God. There is nothing to realize because we already are it. The concept is laughably simple, which is exactly why it is so hard to grasp. Our brains are wired for complexity. We keep looking for elaborate answers and walk right past the obvious one.
The intelligence we are born with is connected to how close we are to that realization. To Liberation. Call it Moksha, call it whatever sits right with you. The gift exists, at its root, to help you uncover what you already are. Self-luminous Parabrahma. Not something outside you. Not something you earn. Something you see.
It works like levels in a game. At each level, you learn the patterns. You start to see what you missed before. And in the next level, you carry that understanding forward. Not because you changed, but because you uncovered more of what was already available. If you feel you carry more intelligence than average, that is not luck. You accumulated it. From how many levels back, I will leave that to you.
Look at the people who seem to have figured this out. Vivekananda could have built an empire. The effort he put into his mission, the discipline, the sheer force of will. He could have been an industrialist or a politician and done well at either. Ramakrishna Dev had no formal education and yet his understanding of reality made scholars feel small. Ma Sarada. Rishi Aurobindo. Brilliant minds, all of them. Some conventionally educated, some not. All of them could have chosen worldly success and won.
They chose differently. They used their intelligence for what it was originally meant for.
The choice
Think of it like this. You have a shiny Lv 99 Legendary weapon. You can use it to slay monsters and grind more gold. Or you can use it to finish the game. There is no wrong answer. Both paths are valid. But only one of them ends the grind.
Money, power, status, validation. These are the gold coins. Real, satisfying to collect. But they do not finish anything. You keep playing the same level with better gear.
Liberation, the realization that you and God are not different from each other, that is finishing the game.
Even as I write this I am sitting with the question myself. I know I have some of this gift. Not Ramanujan-level. But some. And I keep asking myself, what am I going to use it for? Grind more gold? Or try to finish?
I do not have an answer yet. But I think the fact that the question showed up at all means something.
Arko out.
